Mid May News...

Hello families-
I'll try to make this brief since I know how precious time is in May with little ones!

First, we've been engaging in much science this past week or two!
* Building birds nests in cooperative groups (our STEAM curriculum)

* Growing, observing, and finally releasing Painted Lady butterflies into our Happy Hollow garden!

In Social Studies, we've been learning about Communities through interviews with community workers (yourselves!)... thanks for helping with this!

Next we will begin building our Room 6 Community!  We have received wood from Connor's family (thank you!).

Meanwhile we have finally finished our intense math unit on 3-digit addition and subtraction.  The children did well!  They will benefit from continued exposure to coins and exchanging money.  We are moving on to our LAST unit - Data and Measurement.

In Writing we are sharing our wonderful research projects on the Continents, and starting to write Poetry.  It is fun, beautiful and heartwarming.  I love this time of year!!

Thanks to everyone for sending back the permission forms for our upcoming field trip to the North End, this Friday, May 24.  Chaperones will be receiving information in the next couple of days. Everyone has a current CORI form, but many are expiring this year so check with the office if your's is at the 3-year mark.

Finally, please save the date for our Second Grade Open House on Thursday, June 6 from 5-5:30, and then stay for the Happy Hollow Picnic and celebration of Mr. Lee from 5:30 to 7:30.  We are hoping you can make it- there will be so much to show you!

Thanks again for your continued support.

Ms. Niles and Ms. Nolan

May Flowers are Blooming...

What a busy month this is!  I hope you are all taking the time to smell the flowers... it makes all this rain worthwhile! 🌺

Please take a look at the slideshow I created, from the pictures of the Butterfly Place field trip, on the left side of this blog.  Thank you volunteers for chaperoning and sending in your photos!

Here are some photos from the Wayland Clean Up Day that we held back in April.  Thanks to Austin, Alexandra and Aleeza, and their parents, for joining us and picking up LOADS of trash!!

Our last field trip of the year will be to the North End of Boston, on Friday May 24.  You will receive a permission slip this week.  All parents are welcome to join us, and you will have a choice of coming on the bus or driving. Make sure your CORI forms are up to date.

Our End of Year Open House will be combined with the HH Picnic this year.  Our classroom will be opened up for all to view from 5-5:30 on Thursday, June 6.  An invitation will be coming home from your child this week.  We hope you can all make it!
Next, if you can look around your house for BoxTops (on tissue and cereal boxes etc.) please send them in asap.  Our Student Council is trying to collect enough to purchase some large musical instruments for our playground!

Finally, we are looking for garden volunteers!  There are many tasks... from watering, to helping students plant, to serving wonderful organic veggies on Harvest day!!!  Please let me know if you are interested, and keep checking our Garden Blog to see what is needed.

This is a wonderful time of year- when we can enjoy the friendships we have made, think more deeply about our learning, and have fun together.  Thank you once again for all of your support, encouragement, homework help and kindness.  It means so much to me and to these fine students- who are almost ready for THIRD GRADE!!! Do you believe it???
